About the Dachshund Breed

|
Origin: Dachshunds
came from Germany. They were originally bred for hunting and were known
as "badger dogs". Personality: Dachshunds are clever, determined, affectionate, and friendly. They are entertaining and enjoyable companions! Each one is unique in their own way, so personalities often differ. Puppies generally reflect their parent's temperaments. Additionally, proper socialization from a young age has a big effect on the formation of a good temperament. Colors & Patterns: Dachshunds
come in the most colors and patterns of any breed! The most common seen
colors are Red and Black & Tan. However, there is also Cream, Black
& Cream, Chocolate, Chocolate & Tan, Blue, and Isabella.
The patterns include Sable,
Brindle, Dapple, Double Dapple, Piebald, and Brindle Piebald. Coats: Dachshunds come in Smooth, Longhair, and Wirehair. The smooth is short hair. The Longhair is soft and often longer around ears and tail. The Wirehair is slightly coarse, but not too rough. Note: pictured above are all Red Dachshunds (from left to right) Longhair, Wirehair, and Smooth. Sizes: Miniature Dachshunds are considerd to be 11 pounds and under. Standard Dachshunds are considered to be 12 to 32 pounds. General Appearance: Dachshunds have long backs, short legs, long noses, and big ears. Conformation of each differs, however, these are the sought after traits in the breed. Exercise: Dachshunds are a breed recommended for people living in apartments and condos (although they are adaptable to other places as well) since they can get a good amount of exercise in a small area. However, they do enjoy walks too! |
